yes buddha was a real person, he was born 2500 years ago in northern India at a place called Lumbini. his historical name was Siddhattha Gotama. his father was the ruler of the kingdom of Kosala and Siddhattha was therefore born into a life of wealth and privilege.
At the age of twenty nine, he left his father's palace and for the next six years he put his body through extremes of self mortification, including fasting almost to the point of death, than he realized that this method would not bring him complete enlightenment. Instead, he returned to a different, less extreme form of practice which he had stumbled on, almost by accident.. 35 years old now, Buddha sat beneath a tree called Bodhi tree and it was there that he believed to have finally found enlightenment, which was his goal ever since he left his fathers palace
for the remaining forty five years of his life, it is believed that Buddha spent his time as a humble monk, teaching others to realize what he himself had discovered.
Buddhism is the fourth largest religion in the world, being exceeded in numbers only by Christianity, Islam and Hinduism. but because Buddhism does not include the idea of worshipping a creator God, some people do not see it as a religion in the normal,
As Buddhism expanded across Asia, it evolved into two main forms, which evolved largely independently from each other, they are Theravada Buddhism and Mahayana Buddhism
