KEARSE: SEASON-ENDING INJURY
September 18, 2006

Defensive end Jevon Kearse suffered a season-ending left knee injury in Sunday's loss to the Giants. The injury included sprains of multiple ligaments, including the medial collateral ligament, the lateral collateral ligament and the posterior cruciate ligament.
Treatment options for Kearse's knee will be determined in the near future.
The injury cuts short what looked to be a promising year for "the Freak," who collected 2 1/2 sacks of Giants quarterback Eli Manning on Sunday.
Kearse was injured on one of those sacks as his leg knocked against Mike Patterson while the two combined to bring down Manning in overtime. Kearse was visibly in pain. He was helped off the field and carted into the locker room.
The injury is a severe blow to a defensive line that has enjoyed great success with its pass rush -- 13 sacks in two games -- thanks to a creative eight-man line rotation utilized by defensive coordinator Jim Johnson.
Now that group is down one, and the stage is set for former first-round pick Jerome McDougle to step up and see his first action of 2006. He was inactive the first two games but is said to be in good health and ready for the opportunity.
Head coach Andy Reid did not indicate who exactly would replace Kearse in the starting lineup. He was a key cog in Johnson's scheme, a versatile lineman Johnson could move around.
A premier edge rusher, Kearse led the Eagles in sacks the last two years and had 3 1/2 through two games of '06.
Kearse is the second defensive starter the team has lost in as many weeks. Last week, starting cornerback Lito Sheppard went out on the first series with an ankle injury.
Sheppard is improving, but Reid does not expect him to play next Sunday in San Francisco.
"He is getting closer," Reid said. "I don't know if he will be out [there] this week, but he is getting closer."
