Technology DVD Resolution/Bitrates

Hi,

I am trying to back-up my Blu-Rays to DVD and have a few technical questions, if anyone knows anything about doing it? I have to compress the movie first and then burn to DVD. First, what is the ideal screen resolution for DVD (widescreen and fullscreen)? I assume to just pick the best option they give me.

Also, how do I determine what would be the maximum bitrate for video and audio that would be able to fit on a DVD? Is it based on the length of the movie vs the size of the DVD (I have 9 gb)? Is there some formula or is it standard?

Any help would be great!

Thanks!

Same aspect ratio as the original movie. Resolution and video bitrates as high as will fit on a dvd.

Do you have a converter that gives you estimated file size based on settings that you pick?

What I would do:
Audio at about 128-160kbps, AAC is good though most other popular codecs are fine too.
Resolution depends on original movie's aspect ratio and on what you will watch it on. If it's a HDTV I'd go for 720p and video bitrate as high as the size will allow it. If it's a dual layer DVD and it's not a very long movie (if it's less than 2 hours) that way you will lose the least compared to a blu-ray.

Pittsey: I'm sorry...not so much backing them up, but being able to watch my movies in the other rooms in my house, or other places without a BD player.

Masta: LOOONG story short, I got a program that said it would back up to DVD. Doesn't work as advertised, but support told me I can convert the BD, essentially compressing it on my comp. then writing to DVD. I haven't actually tried it yet, but have looked at the compression options. Hopefully it can estimate file size before I spend all that time ripping, like you said. I'll try that next chance I get. Thanks!
