i need a "dos emulator" for windows xp. i'm already familiar with dosbox, but dosbox is crap for games that are fairly new. the reason why i need this is i wanna play a game called "silver" and in order to do so i need ms dos. i tried dosbox a few times, but games run slow and silver ran like crap no matter if i adjusted the frame skip etc. anyone know a good one i can use?

You have the game on your PC? Have you tried running it in DOS mode, under Properties > Compatibility?

I've never used it, and I don't know what it actually does. Someone around here is bound to know of a DOS emulator.

Hey Tbone. I know what your problem is man.First let me explain something.

Windows is essentially running on dos,so basically the dos prompt is really dos itself.

So what does this mean? You don't need a dos emulator since you are already running on dos.

Now why are your games running slow??

I am positive you are only enlarging your dos box window with the little square shape in the top right corner of the dos box? you know how theres a _ BOX X in the top corner, you are pressing the box to make it bigger.

So the solution?

Open up the dos window.Just a straight command prompt, dont double click the exe of the game, but instead go to start, programs, accessories, then choose COMMAND PROMPT.

once the dos box opens, hold the ALT button, then press the enter button. You will then have a true fullscreen mode of dos. From there navigate to the directory of the game and load the game exe file.

for example

type

cd\gamename

game.exe

then the game will load and run just fine.

hope this helps

Dos applications or games will ALWAYS run slow on XP, open a dos promt or programs and check the task manager. There is a file called ntvdm.exe (NT Virtual Dos Machine) that runs and for some stupid reason it uses a shitload of cpu processes. I used to work for a software company that had a dos product and ran like total shit on windows suxp. One thing you can try is a utility called Tame dos http://www.tamedos.com/ it may or maynot work.

Good luck!
