The death of Princess Diana in a car crash in 1997 was an accident and not a conspiracy, an inquiry has concluded.

Former Met chief Lord Stevens said there was no murder, no conspiracy and no cover-up.

He rejected allegations by Mohammed Al Fayed, father of Diana's boyfriend Dodi, who was also killed in the crash, that the pair had been murdered by British secret agents.

Harrods owner Mr Al Fayed has accused the Royal Family, and in particular the Duke of Edinburgh, of ordering their assassination to prevent them marrying.

Lord Stevens acknowledged that Mr Al Fayed was a "genuinely grieving parent" - but said the claims were "unfounded".

He said: "Our conclusion is that, on all the evidence available at this time, there was no conspiracy to murder any of the occupants of the car. This was a tragic accident.

Lord Stevens with the report "I'm satisfied that no attempt has been made to hold back information and we are confident that the allegations made are unfounded."

Lord Stevens also said there was no evidence that Diana, 36, and Dodi, 42, were engaged or that the Princess was pregnant.

Interviews conducted with those close to the Princess, including Prince William, suggested she had given no indication of any wish to marry, Lord Stevens said.

The inquiry, which began in January 2004, cost £3.69m. The report runs to 832 pages.

Lord Stevens said the inquiry had been undertaken because those accused of murder by Mr Al Fayed - such as Prince Philip and members of the security services - deserved to have the "very serious" allegations investigated.

Scene of the crash The inquiry spoke to two eyewitnesses who had not been interviewed previously. Their evidence did not add credence to the conspiracy theories.

Lord Stevens pointed to the role of paparazzi photographers, who were chasing the Princess's car through Paris. He said the pair had changed their travel plans in order to try to lose them.

Their Mercedes was travelling at twice the legal speed limit when it crashed.

Chauffeur Henri Paul, who was also killed in the crash, had been drinking. His alcohol level was twice the British legal limit.

The car hit the kerb just before the 13th pillar in the central reservation of the Alma Tunnel underpass at between 61 and 63 miles per hour.

The report discounts the theory that a flashing light was used to temporarily blind Mr Paul and cause him to crash, as well as theories about a white Fiat Uno clipping the Princess's car.

Lord Stevens said it was unclear why none of those in the car was wearing seatbelts and acknowledged that Diana might have survived had she been wearing one.
