Cosmetic Plastic Surgery

What are your opinions on this?

On the one hand it helps build self-confidence, on the other it promotes a shallow, image-obsessed ideal. Do you think people should live with what they're given, or do you think people are right to make use of the technology if they so desire? Does it promote the quick-fix culture where, rather than dieting and exercise, overweight people can simply go under the knife?

I'll add some more of my thoughts when I have the time, I'm just interested to see what the consensus is.

in my opinion people have the right to make use of the technology but, like you already said, it promotes a quick-fix culture.

cosmetic surgery itself is not the problem its the attitude that comes with it. people might start to think big breasts or a small nose are the norm, which is obviously not the case.

maybe it helps some people (who can afford it) to build self-confidence but on the other hand more people might lose (if it ever existed) their self-confidence because they have a small flaw but cant get rid of it.

Does this include people who have a condition or deformity?

A relation of mine has a cleft lip and palate. I would support their right to plastic surgery.

Personally I think to some people it may be a benefit. If they feel better because of it and they are willing to pay the money then it's their call. Even if they mutilate themselves, if they feel better at the end of they day, then cool. I would never have it myself, even though I have what I consider a big nose. But I think everyone has the right to do with their bodies as they wish. And feeling good about yourself is important for a happy life.

However I think there has to be a responsibility. Espcially by parents of insecure teens, I don't believe in 12-13 year old girls getting nose jobs.

Very true, which is why you see these freaks who are "addicted" to plastic surgery. They are revolting to me, because they just scream out insecurity to me. They will never be satisfied with themselves because its their minds that are also flawed, not just their looks. You can get surgery after surgery and if you never took the time to truly like yourself, you will never ever be happy.

A person who has a big nose and wants to get it trimmed, i understand. A person who has OCD and body dysmorphia who feels the need to constantly adjust their appearance ends up looking like a non-human anyways so i dont care. I find that most people with extensive plastic surgery look like freaks, they dont look like a normal human being so it defeats their whole purpose anyways.

Agreed with most people in here. People should be able to make use of the technology if they want to. And especially people who may have deformaties, or burn victims or people otherwise maimed in an accident can benefit enormously from it.

That said, Pitts hit the nail on the head when mentioning responsibility. People doing it from purely aesthetic reasons (i.e. people just "unhappy" with their face when they look normal otherwise) should think deep and well before they do it. And on the other side the persons carrying out the procedure should be very responsible as well, and not fuck things up. That's what worries me. How many boob jobs go wrong over sloppy surgery? A lot. Too many.

Responsibility is the keyword.

Duke, Pitts and CoolWaterz said pretty much what i wanted to say. If you're that vain and shallow that you think that changing your appearance will somehow improve your life (unless, as stated, it is a deformity or burns or something similar) then you have mental issues that plastic surgery will never solve. I mean i have a few defects myself, such as a misshapen nose, and some small scars on my face. But I would never get plastic surgery done, because i'm not that shallow

i actually did a research on this 2 years ago i think. there's so much risks, if it's purely for esthetic, i think it shouldnt be allowed. if its because of an accident, then yes it should be allowed because its not their fault if they got a car accident, or in a fire or whatever. but if its only cuz oh ur nose is a lil too long or stupid things like that, its ridiculous.

When there's business to be done there's business to be done. If regulated properly, what is the harm in cosmetic surgery? These people willingly take the risks and there are people prepared to do it.

I don't understand how people can think they look ugly. I look at myself and can't tell whether I'm ugly or not, how do people know when they're ugly?

Well, CoolWaterz was talking about them never being satisfied with themselves, they get plastic surgery because they aren't comfortable with their looks. It has nothing to do with what other people think, look at Lil Kim, she looked good until she plastic-surgeried herself to garbage.

Most people aren't ugly. They just want to look like the latest trend of model or celebrity.

Michael Jackson has what he considered a big nose, and yes it may have been a bit boulbus(sp?) but I wouldn't have noticed it if he didn't mention it. Anyway, his brothers bullied him over it and he had a nose job, or 4000. Which looked worse now or before? And he probably still has the same inscurities.

Plastic Surgery will not help 90% of the people who have it. Some will gain benefit for it. And I mean esthetic plastic surgery. But it isn't up to us to say they shouldn't have it because it won't help, and there's nothing wrong with them. It's their bodies and they should be allowed to do with them as they wish. But we need to make sure people and surgeons especially don't make irresponsible decisions.
