Concsiousness...

How do you know that you're the same person 10 minutes from now that you are now? I don't see how yourself in the future is any different than another person, since the present you doesn't experience yourself in the future (or the past) just like you don't experience some other person's consciousness now... Hopefully that makes sense...

Your question falls under the bigger questions of What is a person and What of us stays the same throughout life?

Think on that.

You are the same person you were 10 minutes ago, unless something dramatic happens. If nothing happened in the last 10 minutes, you are the same. If something dramatic, like the death of a relative, happened 10 minutes ago, you are not the same. If something insignificant happens, you are the same.

That doesn't physically make you a different person, you just have a different state of mind.

Questions like this are stupid IMO, people are trying to think out-of-the-box and are totally on the wrong track, life's not THAT complicated.

Doesn't your state of mind and thinking proceses help define who you are?

Consciousness...

You're the same person. I think if I went back in time, I would recognise myself and my younger self could recognise me regardless of how much I've changed physically or how much my opinions have changed.

Ask me again in ten minutes though, I might have changed my mind.

If you have a different state of mind, you're still the same person?

You say questions like this are stupid, only because we can't answer them. You probably prefer questions that have absolute answers. Life is not that simple.

You're never conscious of the present moment because it disappears the moment it becomes conscious and becomes the past. But I don't think I understand what your dilemna is though.

Because I can't answer them? Yes, I do have an answer. I assure you I'll be the same person 10 minutes later, no matter what cute explanations you give me to try to prove me wrong. Like I said, I hate when people think like this, the answer's so damn obvious.

"Ehh I wonder if physical matter is actually physical."

"If a tree falls and no one's around to hear it, will it make a sound?"

Dumbasses.

You can assure me, how?
It's called philosophy. You need go to school and hopefully have good teachers that will open your mind.

per·son Audio pronunciation of "person" ( P ) Pronunciation Key (pûrsn)
n.

1. A living human.

The thread starter is suggesting that in 10 minutes I may just be a different living human.

I mean "same person" only in the sense of your consciousness, not in terms of your knowledge or personality or anything physical. I'm not sure that there's some "self" experiencing one's consciousness over their lifetime or that there's anything linking ourselves between different points in time other than our physical bodies and our memories.

I think our conscious lives might be just a collection of moments created by our physical mind, and that there is no underlying self experiencing all the moments, meaning that the consciousness experiencing your life at this moment is not the same as the consciousness experiencing your life 10 minutes from now any more than it's the same one experiencing someone elses life right now.

It's not a question that bothers me, I just find it interesting. But I do think it's relevant to real-life. In terms of selflessness, if my consciousness in the future is no different than that of another person, then I should be just as concerned about their well-being as I am for my own in the future. I think you should care about other people's well-being regardless, but this is another way of looking at it. Also, if my consciousness in the future is no more different than that of someone else after I die, wouldn't that be a type of reincarnation?
