Scientists believe they are beginning to unlock the mysteries of an object known as the Antikythera mechanism, which spent over 2000 years at the bottom of the sea. So complex is the device, it is being called the world's oldest computer.

Heavily fortified with calcium and other waste deposits from its former ocean grave, the bronze device is a mesh of cogs, gears, and dials, apparently designed to work together in predicting the positions of our solar system's celestial objects.

Scientists who continue to investigate the object are stunned that something so complex could be made in that era. "The skill with which it was made shows a level of instrument-making not surpassed until the Renaissance," said one scientist.

Shit is crazy , such a complex machine being made over 2000 years ago ?!

The Wikipedia article has lots on this;

Following decades of work in order to clean the device, systematic investigations were undertaken in 1951 by British historian of science Derek J. de Solla Price. In June 1959, in a front-page article in Scientific American titled "An ancient Greek computer", he brought forth the theory that the Antikythera mechanism was a device for calculating the motions of stars and planets, which would make the device the first known analog computer.

It's Atlantis, not Antarctica :laugh:

And they won't find it, because it's not real. It was a metaphor.

lmao of at antartica

although i have heard some theories that antartica really was antlantis but i also heard a recent interview with a guy who thinks that antlantis is modern day cyprus and the rest of it is actually under water. he had some interesting things to go along with this claims.

never heard about it being a metaphor before

Last I heard, Atlantis was supposed to be Ireland.

Our understanding of continental drift theory makes the disappearance of a continent, bigger than any that exists today, impossible.

The story of Atlantis comes from Plato, who claimed it was passed down from his grandfather to his father and then to him. Plato was not a historian, nor was he a geographer. He was a philosopher. Nobody else mentioned Atlantis, despite it supposedly being a strong and powerful nation. Nobody wrote of the war between Atlantis and Athens which was described by Plato. In Histories, Herodotus wrote about the many wars and battles between the Greeks and the Persians, but never mentioned Atlantis. Socrates, mentor or Plato, was skeptical of the story too.

Atlantis was, supposedlt, a strong and powerful civilisation which became greedy and tried to expand its borders, and eventually fell into ruin. Sounds like a morality tale to me.
