Technology CDEX Ripping

#1
In Options > Settings > Encoder, Bitrate Max is set at 224 kbps, and can't be changed. The Min however, can still be set to 320 kbps, and the files appear as 320 when ripped. So does the "Max" setting mean anything, or are they actually still being ripped at 320 correctly?

Also, should Convert to Riff WAV files be unclicked?

Thanks.

Edit: Is this still the best program for ripping 320 mp3s? What about the Windows Media Player mp3 ripping programs?

I've never used CDEX so I can't really say. I heard it was a good freeware program to convert files to mp3. Without using the program I assume that the Max bitrate referers to how many Kbps it can Encode.

That depends if your converting a file to a WAV. It could mean that you are converting MP3s to WAV and the Max bitrate it can convert to a WAV is 224?

WMP sucks if you want to encode at anything above 192kbps

Yeah, but even though it says max 224, it still lets me rip at 320, and the files appear as 320 files. So I assume they really are, I just thought maybe it still actually only getting 224 quality, but just making a bigger file.

I can't really tell a difference between the two, but maybe my ears suck. What program do you use for ripping?

When I wan't 320 I use sonicfoundy sound forge but for most stuff I use WMP.

Another question. When I rip a file as .wav using CDEX (or whatever...), does it make literally an exact copy of what's on the CD, or is there still some changes/data loss?

The first 1 should anwser your question.

.WAV is true CD quality. A WAV is CD quality in its purist form. When a CD has been ripped to .WAV and saved on your PC, there is no loss in quality. And should make an exact copy of whats on the CD. :thumb:

However when you ripp a CD and convert it to MP3 compression, there is a loss in quality. The act of taking something larger and in turn making it something smaller in size comes with consequential loss, even if that loss is inaudible. :)

Now the process of converting an MP3 to .WAV, which would be taking something smaller and making it something larger, will not improve the quality of the song. You can't take something less and make it somthing greater. :(
