Technology Can't Read CDs

#1
Recently my CD Drive has been unable to read CDs.

I do the My Computer>CD Drive thing but it always comes up blank.

And the CD Drive icon never changes - indicating the CD has not been read.

It's really pissing me off because Nero consequently won't burn nothing for me.

Help....... :(

In terms of laptop:
This is also happening to me because my CD-RW/DVD is detachable. So once in a while I would take out my drive to put an extra battery on my laptop. Then I would switch it back and the pins don't connect with my drive making it useless. So I have to push the drive hard enough for the pins to connect. But I know my drive is FUBAR.

In terms of Tower:
Go to your control panels click on system, click on the hardware tab, click on device manager and check if you don't have an "x" on your CD/DVD drives.

PaulyPac, my tower has worked fine for a couple of years, this problem is recent. And the CDs still work on other computers & - when audio - work in CD players.

GITVIHC, I got to the device manager (via Control Panel>Performance & Maintenance>Administrative Tools>Computer Management>Device Manager) but the "DVD/CD-ROM drives" is no different to any of the other icons.

I don't know...My uncle had a similar problem with his...turned out the cd-burner went bad... You can try updating the firmware for the cd-burner... I doubt that will help if the drive has in fact gone bad...since I can't sit at your computer and fuck with it and try to get it to work myself I can't help you because I don't have all of the details...In this case which is the worst case you have to replace it with a new burner...they are pretty cheap these days...I don't know what else to tell you because It makes no sense that it would stop working all a sudden...so what else can I tell you...

This has happened to my old computer. When you put in your cds is it that your CD Drive doesnt spin the cds. If that happens it means that the motor that spins the cds is dead and you need to buy a new one.

How do I know if the CDs are spinning?

lets diagnose the problem.

first you said the computer sees the drive,so obviously the damn thing is still hooked properly, and the computer sees the hardware fine,so thats one problem out of the way.

second step. make sure the room ur in is quiet, cuz ur gonna need to listen properly.

put in a cd,then close the drive.

now depending on your drive, some of them have a green or yellow light at the front of the drive, see if you have one,and if u do have one, check to see if it lights up at all and what it does.

now comes the listening part.u should hear like a fan turn on inside the drive (that means the disc is spinning). keep listening and see how long the fan noise stays on,and see if it keeps turning on and off on and off.

^if the fan does that on and off continiously, then ur lens is dirty and u need one of those cd lens cleaners. they arent that expensive.

if u have one of those lights but it doesnt turn on when u insert a cd, then ur drive is toast.

if u have one of those lights and it keeps flashing for a while(id say a good 2-3 minutes) when u insert ur cd,then again,u need one of those lens cleaners.

hope this helps, let us know how it worked out for you

when u put the cd in the drive,u should start hearing it

sorry calcuo for not replying earlier,i forgot about this thread

Yes if the light keeps flashing non stop get a lens cleaner and it will do the trick.

since the light is flashing nonstop, it is trying to read the cd(so the drive itself is fine, its doing its work), but the lens is wornout/dirty. once its cleaned,it should read the cds fine again.

make sure you get a good one though, they have some crappy ass ones that dont do shit.

they're pretty cheap though, ive seen em for like 5 bucks. check out those no-name computer stores(ex: nothing like target, bestbuy but some local owned shop). good luck. let us know how it panned out for you
