Canadian 2011 Election

I know there aren't many Canadians here anymore, but a few thoughts...

- Wow, I guess that 'Orange Wave' was no BS. 104-105 seats (for now, votes still being counted), when their ultimate high was in the 40s before.

- LOL @ the Bloc failing. It's about damn time. Sovereign assholes. Even huge BQ headquarters like Hochelaga fell to the NDP

- What a major fail for the Liberals, I usually vote Libs, but they've been falling apart during the campaign, and I figured the NDP could do some damage, and they sure did.

- Fuck a Conservative majority. I thought it would be a Conservative minority, with the NDP as the official opposition.

- Didn't expect the Atlantic provinces to go Torries, did not expect that at all.

Anyways, this leaves the NDP 4 years to prove themselves, they have ALOT of young and inexperienced MPs, so its going to be interesting to see how they fare. I hope the Liberals come back stronger than ever.... I'm sure they can't wait for Justin Trudeau to step in, can't say I'd hate that either. I'm from a family of huge Trudeauphiles (as well as a mostly Liberal household, obviously)

Personally, I'm happy to see the Bloc go down, but upset for the Conservative majority.

Any thoughts for the few Canadians here?

This was actually a pretty historic election, for the first time the Liberals are not the official opposition party, and the New Democratic Party is for the first time in that place. People are saying it doesn't matter because the Conservatives just got a majority, which is ass imo, but it's still a pretty big accomplishment for the NDP, and historically significant...

They just had an interview with Justin Trudeau, he's probably the only down-to-earth person that understands leadership needs to be built from the ground up, and making a link with the people... something which Ignatieff failed at. It's a real shame what happened to the Libs tonight.

I, like you, would normally vote liberal. But when they appoitned Ignatieff as the leader, they failed.

I am happy the conservatives have a majority finally. This is our third federal election in what? 5 years? That is unacceptable to me. now we may finally able to get shit done around here. The only conservative idea I'm not crazy about is the long barrel gun registry. I would never want an NDP government, ever. The scary thing is, they say once our generation and succesive generations get into their 30's and 40's they probably will

Yeah, in terms of stability it's good to have a majority, but I have a bad taste in my mouth that it's a Conservative one. The fear associated with the NDP is that they'll bankrupt the country if they ever take power. It's a legit fear, but they've also proven themselves to be fiscally responsible in certain districts, Saskatchewan comes to mind 20 some years ago where the Torries fucked everything up there beforehand. It really depends who's running shit and their level of experience.

I voted for the NDP because the Liberals looked totally lost (which they were) and the 'Orange Crush' took everything by storm here, and it was the best opportunity to decimate the damn BQ. Still shocked that Duceppe lost his riding, and that the BQ only won 1 riding here in MTL (by a mere 200 votes)... that's really crazy cause they usually own half of the Island (mostly the East End)

Ignatieff just resigned, God only knows who's going to take the helm for the Liberals. I saw a few interviews with Justin Trudeau, and I feel bad for the guy, he keeps being poked about running as the Liberal leader because of his last name, and he clearly is not yet ready for it and has stated numerous times that he has a long way to go before he can even think about it. I'm expecting Dominic LeBlanc to push for leadership at this point.

Conservatives turned a surplus into a huge debt while managing to cut social programs, at least under NDP we might have something to show for the money. A majority for any government in this day and age is concerning, personally I would have preferred another minority with an NDP opposition.

Given the Conservative control in the house and the senate, I think the Liberals are going to be pushing for a merger before the next election. There's my official prediction documented in history.

Harper is like a smarter and Canadian version of Bush. I like to see leaders who are not the typical spoiled son from a wealthy oil family supported by religious fundamentalists who hide behind a facade of democracy.

I was hoping for the same to be honest, even though returning to the polls over and over again is quite annoying, but we'll have to see if Harper can worsen things with a majority.

A few Liberal MPs have already voiced their opinion on uniting the left, but the idea seems to be split down the middle... Half of them urging it and the other refuse to even consider it and are looking to rebuild within the next 4 years.

Either way, we're stuck with a Torries majority for the next few years lets hope Layton can sway some decisions around even... Will be no easy task, thats for sure.
