#1
Please someone help me. I'm sort of a computer illeterate. My computer is running slow and I've been told I need ram since I've upgraded from Millenium to XP. WHAT IS THE FASTEST RAM AVAILABLE IN STORES AND HOW MUCH WOULD IT COSTS? I've heard 11 mb, 512 mb, 3 mb, and I don't even know what mb is. I am totally clueless. Please someone give me the right numbers involving ram & memory to get for my pc!! I ALSO HAVE THE SAME QUESTIONS ABOUT MEMORY. WHAT IS THE MOST MEMORY OUT THERE FOR A PC? HOW MUCH WOULD IT BE TO ACQUIRE THE MOST MEMORY IN STORES?

PLEASE ANY ANSWERS, TIPS, AND OR RECOMMENDATIONS CAN REALLY HELP ME!!

it all depends on what type of motherboard the ram gets attached to and what type of ram it is and how fast ur processor is and what type it is, theres 2 types of ram for personal computers (non-government computers) RD and SD, RD costs more and is less common, SD is cheaper, you can prolly pick up 2 512mb SD Ram for under $300 at best buy, But for you, i would suggest having someone that lives around you and knows a little bit about computers to come look at it for you and tell you what they think, also how much of your hard disk drive (where u store data) is used up and how much is availible for storage. sorry if i confised you but i'm just trying to tell what i can from the bit of info that you gave me.

This is what I have on my PC:

HP_PAVILION (C:)
File System:FAT32
Free Space:4.04 GB
Total Size:19.0 GB

With that info about my PC, what is the most space I could acquire for my PC? How Much Also?

another way to check your pc specs, is to click on START then Run .
Type in - dxdiag . The Processor spead and memory should appear.

You should buy-Two 1 Gb memory sticks :) cost would be about 100£ for each or maybe less. You said your pc is old so it must be SD ram. If you buy the wrong Ram it willnt fit into your motherboard.

Best thing to do is to buy a new motherboard + processor(Get at least a
Petium 4, 3 Ghz or an AMD 3500+ ).Also a 100+ G.B Hardrive :D

If there is a local PC shop where you live. Take it there and get it completely upgraded.

My PC isn't that old. Its an hp pavilion mx50 and it was bought around 2000 to 2001, unless you consider 4-5 years in PC age old. Here is the info on it:

Processor: Intel Celeron, 700MHz
Memory: 62MB RAM
Page file: 131MB used, 38MB available
DirectX version: DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)

Thanks-HOW CAN YOU HELP ME WITH THIS INFO? IN OTHER WORDS WHAT IS THE MOST SPEED & MEMORY I COULD GET TO UPGRADE MY PC.

The computer specs arent the best. What you should do is to take your computer down to a pc shop and tell them you want your pc upgraded, With a new processor + more ram. This is the easiest thing to do, and it avoids you buying anything that willnt fit in your motherboard!

Yea, do what Ketley4 said. The processor is weak, and 62 MBs of ram isn't too good. Your computer must run slow. So take Ketley4's advice and take it to a computer shop.

I know what you guys are advicing is the best advice because my specs aren't the best, but there's no need to take it to the pc shop when I have family that can install the things needed. Thats why I'm here and asking about the best possible processors, rams, and or memory to make my pc better. The person who'll put in the items knows how to put things in the pc, but he's not sure about specs. So if some of you don't mind sharing your specs and or telling me the best ram or processor, I'd really appreciate it.

He should know how about the specs if he knows how to put it in, but what ever. Here's some hardware you could buy.

Processor: Any is better then what you've got right now, so pretty much any off this page would be fine.

Memory: Make sure you know what kind of RAM you got before buying, so ask the guy to check what kind you got. But look at this page for memory.

Hard Drive: Take a look at this page for Hard Drives.

Since your PC is about 5 years old, im guessing the video card is kind of outdated, so check out this page for some video cards.

Hope this helps. :thumb:

Thanks for all the help you are helping me with, but please expect some maybe strange questions from me since I'm sort of a computer illiterate.

What does the intel processor determine? Also, I'm confused about ram & memory, ARE THEY THE SAME THING? I don't know which one of these internal pc items determines speed, space, memory, etc. PLEASE SOMEONE BREAK IT DOWN TO ME. I'M JUST BEING EXTRA CAUTIOUS, SO I'M GOING TO ASK AS MANY QUESTIONS AS POSSIBLE BEFORE I MAKE ANY DECISIONS.!!

Lmao....hp pavilion mx50.......Is The Monitor For 1......(Cause Im Staring At Mine)...And Since It Seems Like We Basically Have The Same Comp. I Thought I Would Help Ya Out A Lil Bit....

You Have A Lil Over A 20GB Hard Drive....(This Is What Youve Been Calling "Memory")...I Would Suggest That You Buy At LEAST An 80GB Hard Drive...But Considering Prices You Could Easily Get A Bigger One Now A Days....(Someone Else Can Recommend A Brand Or Whatever...)....

You Have 64MB Of Ram....Id Suggest At LEAST 256MB......But Considering Prices Of Course You Can Easily Buy Something With More MB.....Make Sure Its For PC100 And/Or PC133....Since Your Comp Is Like Mine Or Very Similar...Its Prolly PC133....Im Not Sure About The Highest Upgrade But You Could Easily Get 2-512MB PC133's....(Again....Brands....Ask Someone Else).........

But Yea..You Asked For Those....If You Really Wanted To Go All Out....Go Buy New Processors And Motherboards....But Considering You Could Go And Buy A New Comp. For Like $300....Its Kinda Pointless To Upgrade These For The Fact That You Would Spend Over $300 For The Really Good Processors And Motherboards....Hope I Helped...Peace...

Ok, the 'memory' in your computer is RAM (Random Access Memory). Now, the processor is the brains of your computer. The faster the processor is, the more tasks it can do. So, if you want to know exactly what type of RAM goes into your computer, go here, and click on download, then 1.29. Once you've downloaded it, click on the 'cpuz' icon, and click on the 'memory' tab. Right under the tab it should say 'Type'. That's what kind of memory you have. Once you have that, click over to the 'SPD' tab, and check what your 'maximum bandwidth' is. Then go here , and you can do and advanced search for the specific type of RAM you want.

ANOTHER QUESTION- DOES PROCESSORS HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH HARD DRIVES?

I'M WORRIED BECAUSE MY PC HAS BEEN UPGRADED FROM MILLENIUM TO XP AND THERES PLENTY OF MP3's, reports, and other things THAT WENT MISSING DURING THE UPGRADE PROCESS. MY QUESTION IS IF I CHANGE MY PROCESSOR WILL I BE ABLE TO STILL RECOVER MY OLD FILES?

I have another question. What does the video card do? Does it determine how laggy your video is when trying to watch something over the pc? Because my concept right now is the latest your video card is, the less possible lag that will show in your videos, but I'm not even sure what a video card does. So I just want to be clear on it.

Hituup- To upgrade your ram you would first have to open up the case to see what kind you have and how many DIMM slots are availible to add ram. Remember google is your friend. ;)
