Ok, apparently I had a virus on my comp and I had to reinstall Windows. Now I have no sound. I can't play my music. :(
When I go into my control panel and into multimedia, it says I have no playback devices.
Somebody please help me, I gotta have my music.
Thanks.

No, I don't :( I bought my comp used and everything was already installed in it. So basically I'm prolly gonna have to go and buy a sound card?

Yeah, I've done all that. When I click on the properties for my soundcard, it says this device is installed but has a problem and it says to fix the problem, click to update driver. I did that and it still doesn't work. Everything says that the device is enabled but nothing works. Its all on my device list but it has a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark inside. I even went to driverguide.com and downloaded the same driver thats on my comp and it gave me an error message that said setup could not be completed.

a) download the ESS PCI device identifier utility
b) unzip the utility to your desktop
c) execute the ESPCI_ID.BAT file
d) use windows explorer to find this file: C:\RESULT.TXT
e) double click the file to open
f) look for the &DEV_1xxx in the RESULT.TXT

download the corresponding driver here (under windows 98se wdm). unzip files to a newly created folder on your desktop.

in device manager uninstall your audio device(s).

run setup in the folder you created on your desktop, reboot.

Ok, did that, restarted and it says file name allegro.cat cannot be found, insert windows 98 cd. Inserted the cd, it says file name allegro.cat cannot be found on windows 98 cd. It said to click ok again to try and copy again and I kept doing that over and over and still get the same thing.

You have been such a great help but I'm beginning to think its pointless. I'm bout to give up. I tried what you said in the last post and it says please wait for the installation process to complete and I left it for like 2 hours and it still wouldn't do anything.
The more I try it, the more frustrating it gets so I'm bout to say fuck it.

spoons, thank you so very much for all of your help. I just went ahead and bought me a new soundcard. But thanks again, anytime I need any help, I'll know who to go to next time :D
