hold down play and menu at the same time for about 5 secounds or until the ipod resets, it should look like its turned off for a few seconds then it will show the apple logo and resume at the main menu

I got some bad news for ya man. Your hard drive will go FUBAR any time now. I had the same exact problem in which I would restart and restart the ipod again to no avail. It would take for me 30 minutes to actually start the sucker up. Thankfully I had a 4 year warranty with Best Buy so I took it in found out the hard drive was messed up and changed it. I just hope you bought some sort of warranty or check with an ipod specialist and see if they can help you out. Ask for prices (Best Buy, Apple stores). I'm sorry youre having problems with your ipod, I know the ipods are great mp3 players and I wish I can actually take a look at it so I can help you out :(

Tip: If you are going to buy an ipod anytime soon buy it from Best Buy. Even though they are the same price with no discount get the 3 year product replacement plan which is 40 bucks I think. Basically if your ipod ceases to function they will give you a brand new ipod on the spot. Nice eh? Yes this is a true story, scouts honor.

yeah, those warranties are awesome....i bought one for my ipod...and being the careless bastard i am, i dropped down the stairs...smooth side down, so it kept going on the carpet on the stairs....and kinda shattered....so there was this comin out of the screen, so i just took it in, and no questions asked they replaced it....so yeah, getting those warranties from best buy is a good thing....plus, if you're a reward zone member...think of all the points....

^Worst mp3 player I have ever seen. I have a 5 gig one and its shitty to say the least. The interface, accessibility and sounds are horrid compared to the ipod. Want to know how bright the Dell Jukebox players are? Well I just received there catalog and they have no mention of their mp3 players in there other than buying an armband for it.

This is a software problem. Make sure you hae the latest version of itunes- then run the ipod updater. This should sort it out- any more problems contact me i have had more than my fair share of problems with my ipod and in doing so learnt all the tricks to get the machine up and running again.ALso by far and away the best hard drive player is the sony hd3. It is solidly built and has a 40 hour playback time plus the interface pretty straight forward. People complain about the software that has to be used to upload it (sonicstage) but just have a quick scan on the net and you will find a replica of itunes for it. STill don't believe me? search ebay for faulty ipods and see the 100's of results then search for faulty sony's and at the most you will see 1of 2

Obviously there are only 1 or 2 sony defects because nobody is buying that mp3 player, while-as ipods are in huge demand and are selling. I bet you the ipod is outselling the sony 50 to 1. So youre conclusion is not valid.

my ipod freezes, but only when i put the itrip in.

for those who don't know, the itrip is this little horizontal cylinder that you plug into the top of the ipod. it transmits your ipod's audio to a radio, so you can play your ipod songs through a car radio wirelessly. it looks like this:

however, when i try to play some songs, and ONLY some songs, it freezes and shuts off. it kills a shitload of battery when it does that, too.

i don't think it's the song, because i've played both AAC and mp3 files, and they both work.

i'm just curious if this happens to anyone else.

I took my ipod back to pc world today (where I bought it) and they ran some tests on it and exchanged it right there and then, for the the 20gb colour ipod photo at no extra charge, where as the one that broke was just a plain old 20gb, so thats a real bonus for me!

props to pc world!!
