Analyst: Black Ops Outpacing Modern Warfare 2 in Pre-Order Sales
By Mike Sharkey | Jul 12, 2010
Is the real Modern Warfare killer another Call of Duty game?
Call of Duty: Black Ops is a leap forward for developer Treyarch's slice of the franchise, both in terms of gameplay and its Vietnam-era setting. Publisher Activision also hopes it will be a leap forward in sales, and judging by pre-orders, it might even top Modern Warfare 2.
Pacific Crest analyst Evan Wilson told Industry Gamers retailers have received more pre-orders for Black Ops than they had at the same point in time prior to the release of Modern Warfare 2 -- a game that has sold more than 20 million copies worldwide.
Wilson didn't provide any pre-order numbers, but he did say that, despite the early sales surge, he does not think Black Ops will sell more than 12 million copies. Competition from Electronic Arts' Medal of Honor reboot and the Infinity Ward implosion will have a big impact on sales, he said.
Black Ops is set to ship for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, the Nintendo Wii, and Windows PCs on November 9.

Sharkey says: I don't think Medal of Honor and the Infinity Ward situation will have much of an impact on sales. The franchise is crack for many gamers, and the opportunity for a new campaign and new maps, particularly ones set in a more modern era, won't be passed up by many fans. This game feels much more like Modern Warfare 3 than another Treyarch WWII Call of Duty game, and I think gamers are psyched for that. My completely random estimate: 15 million copies.

I hope that Treyarch do out sell IW. It would probably set the bar higher for IW to come up with something interesting. I know most PC gamers are buzzing about Black Ops, they've always had a soft spot for Treyarch since they're pretty loyal to the fans and add popular suggestions from the forums into their games (The World at War dogs in multiplayer for example was a fan idea that Treyarch liked lol). How about you XBox 360 / PS3 fans? Will you guys be picking it up?
