Jerry Rice retires from football

DENVER (AP) -- Unwilling to be a bit player with the Broncos, Jerry Rice retired Monday, closing a 20-year career for the most productive receiver in NFL history.

Rice, 42, made his decision over the weekend at home in San Francisco, then returned to Broncos headquarters and met with coach Mike Shanahan. He played 20 NFL seasons.

``This is a happy day,'' he said. ``I think the tears that you see basically is that I have really enjoyed this ride.''

Shanahan confirmed what Rice already knew -- that he would be a fourth or fifth receiver, at best this season -- and Rice confirmed what many figured -- that he would rather call it quits than be a bit player with the Broncos.

Its a shame he didnt retire a Raider, we'll all miss him, he was a great player.
Why would he retire as a Raider when he made a name for himself in San Fran? He did nothing in Oakland and didn't help the Raiders what-so-ever

Peace

Just some stats for you:

Receptions: 1549

Avg. Yards: 14.8
Touchdowns: 197 (Recieving) 208 (Total) All of which he holds the records for

- 13 time Pro Bowler
- Recorded more career yards from scrimmage (23,540) and combined yards (23,546) than any player in NFL history
- Totaled 38 career records
- Set an NFL single season recieving yardage record in 1995 with 1,848 yards
- Posted an NFL single season record of 22 touchdown catches in 1987
- Caught a pass in 274 consecutive games from 1985 to 2004, yet another NFL Record
- Recorded more than 100 yards recieving in an NFL record setting 76 games, as well as 8 post-season 100 or more yard games
- Some more records, 14 1,000+ yard seasons, 4 100+ catch seasons, and a record 3 consecutive 100+ reception seasons

Definitely the greatest football player who ever lived IMO
