The 5% nation(now known as "The Nation of Gods and Earths") was created by Clarence Jowars Smith around 1964
. He rose to the rank of Lt. in the nation of islam military training unit (know as the Fruit of Islam FOI)
With turmoil during the time when Malcolm X was suspended and rumors of Muhammads extramartial news scandels, got kicked out do to his preaching or gambling activities. they never really said why they escorted him from the nation.
Clarence 13X(as he goes by now) reinterpreted the Nation of Islam's set of "Lost-Found lessons" which is a catechism that regulted from fards purported conversation with Elijah Muhammad. The lessons thats every black muslim had to memorize.
*85 percent of humanity is mentall dead and ignorantly destroys itself through vice and immorality.
*10 percent possess the truth but oppress the first 85 percent by convincing them to believe in a "myster god" who cannot be seen in this lifetime.
*5 percent constitute the "poor righteous teachers" who also possess the truth -- namely, that the "living god is the son of man, the supreme being, or the black man of asia"

Sidenote: This is where the "god" lingo that has took root in new york came from.
they also created a variation of "mathematics" called "supreme mathematics". which is basically the beliefe in that there is only 10 numbers. and every number (0-9) represents a aspect and level of spirtuality. I got a tat on the back of my neck with supreme mathematics in it. when people inquire bout it they only admire it's design, i attempt to break it down it's meaning and my link to it but they part of that 85 percent. seems like your almost forced into becoming a 10%'er (just joking)
